Long, long ago, in a certain place, there lived an old man and an old woman.

The old man went up into the mountains to gather firewood, and the old woman went down to the river to wash clothes.

As the old woman was washing by the river, a great big peach came floating down the stream.

The old woman carried the peach home with her.

When she cut the peach open, out popped a bright, lively little boy.

The two of them gave the boy the name Momotaro.

When Momotaro had grown big, he decided to go to Ogre Island to defeat the ogres.

The old woman made him some millet dumplings.

Along the way he met a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant.

Momotaro shared his millet dumplings with them, and the three became his companions.

おにしまおにたたか

Together they went to Ogre Island and fought the ogres.

Momotaro and his friends were so strong that the ogres said "We're sorry" and begged for forgiveness.

むらかえ

Momotaro took the treasure and returned to his village.

よろこしあわ

The old man and the old woman were overjoyed.

And they all lived happily together ever after.
