昔むかし、神様かみさまが動物どうぶつたちに手紙てがみを送おくりました。

Long ago, the gods sent a letter to all the animals.

「正月しょうがつの朝あさ、私わたしの所ところへ来きてください。

一番いちばんから十二番じゅうにばんまでの動物どうぶつに、

一年いちねんずつ名前なまえをあげます」動物どうぶつたちはみんな、

"Come to me on New Year's morning. The first twelve animals shall each have a year named after them."

その日ひを楽たのしみに待まちました。

Every animal looked forward to that day.

ねこはねずみに「何日なんにちでしたか」と聞ききました。

The cat asked the mouse, "What day was it again?"

ねずみはわざと「二日ふつかですよ」

とうそを言いいました。正月しょうがつの朝あさ、

The mouse lied on purpose: "It is the second."

牛うしは歩あるくのが遅おそいですから、

だれよりも早はやく家いえを出でました。

On New Year's morning the ox, who walked slowly, left home earlier than anyone.

ねずみはその牛うしの背中せなかに、そっと乗のりました。

The mouse quietly climbed onto the ox's back.

神様かみさまの所ところに着つく前まえに、ねずみは背中せなかから下おりて、

走はしって一番いちばんになりました。牛うしは二番にばん、虎とらは三番さんばん、

Just before they arrived, the mouse jumped down and ran ahead to finish first.

うさぎは四番よんばんでした。そのあとに、龍りゅう、へび、馬うま、

The ox was second, the tiger third and the rabbit fourth.

羊ひつじ、猿さる、鳥とり、犬いぬ、いのししが来きました。こうして、

After them came the dragon, the snake, the horse, the sheep, the monkey, the rooster, the dog and the boar.

十二じゅうにの動物どうぶつが決きまりました。

And so the twelve animals were decided.

ねこは一日いちにち遅おくれて来きましたから、

十二支じゅうにしに入はいることが出来できませんでした。

The cat came a day late, and so could not join the twelve.

それから今いまでも、ねこはねずみを追おいかけます。

And from that day to this, the cat still chases the mouse.
