昔々むかしむかし、浦島太郎うらしまたろうという優やさしい漁師りょうしがいた。ある日ひ、

Long, long ago, there lived a kind fisherman named Urashima Taro.

浜辺はまべで子供こどもたちが亀かめをいじめていた。

One day, on the beach, some children were tormenting a turtle.

浦島太郎うらしまたろうは「かわいそうだから、やめなさい」

と言いって、亀かめを助たすけてやった。次つぎの日ひ、

Urashima Taro said, "The poor thing—please stop," and rescued the turtle.

海うみで釣つりをしていると、助たすけた亀かめがやって来きて、

「お礼れいに竜宮城りゅうぐうじょうへ連つれて行いきます」と言いった。

The next day, while he was fishing at sea, the turtle he had saved came swimming up and said, "To thank you, I will take you to the Dragon Palace."

浦島太郎うらしまたろうは亀かめの背中せなかに乗のって、

海うみの底そこにある美うつくしい竜宮城りゅうぐうじょうへ行いった。

Urashima Taro climbed onto the turtle's back and went down to the beautiful Dragon Palace at the bottom of the sea.

そこでは乙姫様おとひめさまが待まっていて、

毎日まいにちごちそうを食たべたり、

魚さかなたちの踊おどりを見みたりして、

楽たのしい時間じかんを過すごした。しかし、しばらくすると、

浦島太郎うらしまたろうは村むらに残のこした母ははのことが心配しんぱいになった。

But after a while, Urashima Taro began to worry about the mother he had left behind in his village.

乙姫様おとひめさまは「決けっして開あけてはいけません」と言いって、

玉手箱たまてばこを渡わたした。村むらに帰かえると、

Princess Otohime said, "You must never open it," and handed him a jeweled box.

知しっている人ひとは誰だれもいなかった。海うみの中なかの三年さんねんは、

When he returned to his village, there was no one left whom he knew.

地上ちじょうでは何百年なんびゃくねんも経たっていたのだ。

The three years he spent beneath the sea had been hundreds of years on land.

悲かなしくなった浦島太郎うらしまたろうは、

約束やくそくを忘わすれて玉手箱たまてばこを開あけてしまった。すると、

Overcome with sorrow, Urashima Taro forgot his promise and opened the jeweled box.

中なかから白しろい煙けむりが出でて、浦島太郎うらしまたろうはあっという間まに

白髪しらがのおじいさんになってしまった。

At once white smoke poured out, and in the blink of an eye Urashima Taro turned into a white-haired old man.
